Funding for Action & Education

PARENTAL NOTIFICATION BAD PUBLIC POLICY

The Board of Directors of Girl’s Best Friend Foundation (GBF) announced on January 25th that it has made up to $100,000 available to groups/organizations of youth and their adult allies who are educating young people about the impact of and preparing for the possible implementation of coercive new public policy aimed at girls and young women.

Priorities for grant funding are:

  • Youth-led efforts to educate about and mobilize youth on parental notification policy that limits young women’s access to abortion.
  • If parental notification law goes into effect in IL, work by groups/organizations of youth and their adult allies to develop or strengthen coordinated approaches to:
    • educate all young women about new legal requirements and alternatives to parental notification;
    • accompany and advocate for and with all young women who wish to use a bypass system in lieu of notifying a parent; and
    • change public policy so that it supports girls’ well-being, power, and self-determination.
  • Education and mobilization by adults who work with youth, about parental notification policies that limit young women’s access to abortion.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate that feminist, girl-centered/girl-friendly, social justice values infuse the organization or group. We want to reach groups in many geographic, identity, and constituent communities. Eligible efforts must have a focus on the Chicago metropolitan area or be state-wide in scope. Grants will be made in a variety of amounts; requests for more than $20,000 must be exceptionally strong, in the view of the Foundation.

To apply for funding:

  1. Please email or call a GBF staff person about your idea or plan. If emailing, please send a brief summary only. If calling, please be prepared with a short summary.
  2. Groups with strong and strategic ideas and plans will be invited to provide additional information, via a written proposal or a meeting.
  3. Some applicants may be referred to other groups for possible cooperative or joint efforts.
  4. GBF intends to respond to all requests rapidly.

Please email contact@girlsbestfriend.org, or call Julie Walther at 312-266-2842 ext 12. Your message will be assigned to a GBF staff person, who will respond to serious queries within 5 business days. Calls and mail from anti-choice groups will not receive a reply.
